I think it’s safe to say that the vast majority of us have heard or used this saying ourselves – ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’. The notion that breakfast is the most important meal actually comes from a 1917 edition of Good Health magazine in which Lenna F. Cooper wrote the well known quote. Regardless of underlying motives of the quote’s origins (read: the magazine was edited by the god father of flaked cereal, Dr Kellogg himself) as the first meal of the day, breakfast is very important to kickstart your morning and stock you up on energy.
Complex carbohydrates, protein and fresh fruit are often recommended to us as part of a healthy first meal and of course, the humble bowl of porridge is no stranger to the breakfast table! Oats contain a type of fibre called beta-glucan which has been shown to benefit blood cholesterol levels in studies carried out since 1963. This make porridge a fantastic start to the day and even better news is that it’s super easy to make and also to make interesting!
Basic Porridge Recipe
1/2 cup porridge oats
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1. In a saucepan, add the oats, milk and water and bring to the boil.
2. Turn the heat down to a low simmer and let the porridge cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally so it doesn’t stick.
3. Once the porridge is thick and creamy it is ready to serve.
Redbush and Vanilla Porridge
Redbush and Vanilla Tea is a lovely infusion of South African rooibos tea with delicate vanilla and aromatic petals. This means it has an all round sweet and caramel like flavour without the sugar! To infuse your porridge with Redbush and Vanilla tea simply add 1 or 2 tea bags into the pan whilst your porridge is cooking to infuse the flavours. Once cooked, squeeeeeze the tea bags against the side of the pan to make sure you get lots of flavour then serve with sour dried cherries and curls of dark chocolate for a decadent breakfast.
Chai Infused Porridge
We have been very much in love with the chai-spiced craze as it means we have lots and lots of new ideas and recipes to use our Baby, It’s Cold Outside chai tea in. Chai is a mix of spices such as cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove and cardamom and this blend gives it a deliciously warm flavour and aroma – perfect for a healthy breakfast on chilly mornings. To infused chai tea into porridge I like to add a chai tea bag to some almond milk and heat it up to a simmer so that the flavours can merge. Then use this milk to make up your oats as normal. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top for extra yumminess and ta dah!
Breakfast is an ideal time to kick off your 5 a day and to get some nutrients into your system. I love using fresh berries in porridge, whether they are stewed into the oats as they cook or simply sliced fresh on top with a dollop of natural yogurt. Peach & Rosemary Porridge
Peach and rosemary are a lovely pair of flavours that are just as great in drinks as they are in food. If you cook some chopped fresh peaches into your milk and oats they will become lovely and soft, almost pureed as the porridge simmers. Adding a sprig of rosemary to the pan brings out the sweet, peachy elements and just makes your healthy breakfast just that little bit more special. Go that extra mile and top with more fresh peaches and PopaBall peach boba!
